FR Allan Roderick 'Rod' Gillis

GILLIS, Allan Roderick "Rod" - 89, Lower Sackville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 26, 2008, in the Halifax Infirmary QEII, surrounded by his greatest treasure, his family. Born June 19, 1918, he was a son of Catherine (MacDonald) and John A. Gillis and was the last surviving member of his family. He served overseas from 1942-1945 in England, Germany, Belgium, France and Holland as a motorcycle dispatch rider with the 86th Bridge Co. On his return to civilian life he delivered bread for Ben's Bakery for several years before beginning 27
years of employment with the DND Fire Department. Rod will be most remembered for his quiet strength and generous spirit. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Evelyn Norine (Sampson); sons, Bernie (Barb), Michael (Bonnie), Ronnie (Carla), and daughter Betty; 16 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Howard, John, Hugh, Bernard, Donald and Mickey, and sisters, Agnes, Irene, Hazel, Charlotte, Martha Rowena, and special sister, Mary. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen St., Dartmouth. Funeral Mass will be Thursday, May 1, at 10 a.m. in St. John Vianney Church, Lower Sackville, followed by a reception in the church hall. Cremation will take place following the service with burial on Friday, May 2, at 1 p.m. in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville. Family flowers only please. Donations may be made to the Canadian
