Gregory Howard Hammond CD
HAMMOND,
Gregory Howard “Greg” – 86, Burlington, Kings Co. passed away on Monday,
February 28, 2011, surrounded by his family, in Valley Regional Hospital,
Kentville. Born in West Saint John, N.B. he was a son of the late J. Allan and
Isabel (Huard) Hammond. Greg was a veteran of the second world war. He served in
the merchant Navy. He served with the RCNVR British Destroyer HMS Buxton. He
served on the Corvettes in the Atlantic Convoy. Greg had worked as a brakeman on
the C.P.R. Then he served with RCAF as a firefighter in Germany and across
Canada retiring from Greenwood CE Section in 1985. Greg was a member of the
Royal Canadian Legion, Ortona Branch # 69, Berwick, and the Kings County
Veterans Club. He was cherished by his family who he cherished very much. Greg
is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Verna (Miller); sons, Gordon (Barb),
Gays River; Greg, Windermere; daughters, Sheila (Deb) Peelar, Kentville; Susan
(Ian) Clark, Greenwood; Cindy-Lou Hiltz, Burlington; Simone Manley, Wolfville;
brother, Frank, Bridgewater; sister, Susan Garey, Sechelt, B.C.; grandchildren,
Melanie, Jon, Shannon, Allyson, Martin, Jasmine, Jeffrey, Selah; great
grandchildren, Tommy, Chloe, Jessica and Quinn; several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents Greg was predeceased by son, David Gregory in infancy and
son-in-law Bill Hiltz. There will be no visitation by request. A Royal Canadian
Legion Service and Funeral Service, followed by a reception will be held 2:00
p.m., Friday March 4, 2011, in Serenity Lindsay Funeral Home, 192 Commercial
St., Berwick, NS B0P 1E0 (902-538-9900), with Pastor Christina Bigelow
officiating. Interment will be in the Burlington Cemetery at a later date.
