FR Elroy Roosevelt Hill 

HILL, Elroy Roosevelt - 77, Aldershot, Kings Co., passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2006, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Bear River, Digby Co., he was a son of the late Benjamin and Blanche (Hawkins) Hill. In his early years he had been employed at the lumber and stave mill in Bear River. He later trained at Camp Aldershot and had been employed for 27 years with the Department of National Defence, Halifax. He was proud to be the first African Canadian hired by the DND as a professional firefighter. He was a former board member of the Black Cultural Society of Nova Scotia and was a member of Centreville Baptist Church. For many years, he had been a member and supporter of Bethany Memorial Baptist Church in Aldershot where he was a former deacon, Sunday school teacher, usher and member of the Men's Brotherhood. He enjoyed playing horseshoes, camping, gardening, singing and bowling. He was a loving and caring father, grandfather and friend to many. He is survived by son, Elroy Jr., Aldershot; daughter, Ramona, Eastern Passage; grandchildren, Jackson and Ashlee; brothers, Louis "John" (Esther), Weymouth Falls; Venable "Vinnie", Bear River; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Joan Skinner; daughter-in-law, Suzanne Jackson-Hill; sisters, Dora Hill, Beatrice Hill, Edith Langford, Gertrude Hill, Georgina Harper, Eva David, Blanche Hill, Ada Symonds, Mary Hill, and Dorothy Hill; brothers, James "Vernon", Harry, Douglas, and Walter. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, March 17, in White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where a funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 18, Rev. Marc Potvin officiating. Burial will take place in Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings Co. Family flowers only by request.
