Master Warrant Officer (Retired) Thomas Makin, CD

MAKIN, Thomas Sanford - 73, Halifax, passed away on Monday, September 11, 2006, following a brief battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). Born in Murphy Cove, he was a loving husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and colleague. Tom was always willing to lend a helping hand and his kind and thoughtful way gave him the ability to light up any room. He always put others before himself. He never complained and took life in stride, one day at a time. He as a hardworking man who knew the value of a job done right. Tom's family were very proud of his 43 years spent in the fire service. He served as a member of the R.C.A.F. for 21 years and at the time of his retirement, he was the Provincial Fire Marshal. He was a man of great faith and an active member of St. Lawrence Parish. He was an avid cyclist and enjoyed donating his time to numerous charities and church activities. Tom is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Marguerite (Little/Boswell); children, Alana LaFlamme, Coleen Scott, Roberta Makin, Kelly (Roger) Johnson, Tracy White, Jo-Ann Tolbart and Tom (Suzanne) Makin Jr. He was also a loving father to Joanne Boswell, Marilyn (Bill) Doucette and Edward Boswell. He is also survived by grandchildren, Damien, Cory, Lydia, Justine, Sylvia, Teddy, Adam, Jenna, Christine, Frank, Beth, and three great-grandchildren, as well as sister, Judy (Andy) Gazo; brothers, Kirk MacDonald and Douglas MacDonald. Tom was predeceased by his mother, Melva MacDonald; first wife, Barbara (Wills); grandchild, Jenny; and an infant son. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place on Thursday from 7-9 p.m. in T.K. Barnard Funeral Home, 3460 Dutch Village Rd. A memorial service honouring Tom's life will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Lawrence's Roman Catholic Church. Reception will follow in the church hall.
