Moose
Jaw 1974 Retirement Presentation:
In 1957 (or thereabouts) the AMC Fire Marshal Was responsible for some 23 widely scattered
Fire Departments. In order to help them realize that they were part of a large organization, he
designed a competition drill for small Departments. In his summer tour the drills were run off
against a stopwatch and the winning department was awarded a trophy. Thanks to a technician at
6RD who loved making trophies, a beautiful one was made. For the next 3 years it was
successfully competed for every summer.
With the posting out of the FM, the competition came to an abrupt halt. The trophy was
forwarded to the Fire Fighter School for safe keeping. When the originator of the competition
wound up as TC Fire Marshal out of Winnipeg, he reinstituted the competition for Training
Command Fire Departments. There was no keener bunch than Don Teed's department at CFB
Moose Jaw. They won three years in a row. Don exercised the traditional right that states, "win
it three times in a row and it's yours".
About this time the TC Fire Marshal was due for retirement. He was invited to Moose Jaw for a
retirement dinner. Up until that time there had not been liquid refreshments served in a working
Fire Hall. With the CO's blessing and presence, all went well. At the end of the dinner the
trophy, suitably engraved, was presented to the originator to take with him in to retirement.
That trophy still resides in Phil's den as a reminder of the many happy years spent as a member of
the RCAF Fire Service.
